Conscious
Teaching’s Rick Smith and Grace Dearborn
have developed a classroom management e-learning course for K-12
teachers based on Rick’s book Conscious Classroom Management.
This interactive online learning course is called “Conscious
Classroom Management Online.”
The purpose of the course is to help both new and veteran teachers
become familiar with the invisible concepts and strategies that effective
classroom managers use. These strategies will help teachers and their
students achieve more in an environment consciously constructed to
feel safe and foster learning.
“Conscious Classroom Management Online” can be taken anytime
by anyone, on demand, at school, at home or anywhere else internet
access is available. The course is self-paced, thus fitting all participant’s
time schedules and lifestyles. The lessons are quick-paced, engaging
and relevant for all teachers regardless of grade level, experience,
or student population.

This is an online portfolio that all your work will be saved to as
you move through the course. When you have completed the course you
will have the option of downloading and printing any or all of the
pages in this portfolio for your future reference and use.
Once you complete the course, Conscious Teaching
will review your online portfolio, and all other posts made by you
as part of your course work. If your portfolio is determined to be
complete, you will be notified by email and sent instructions for
printing a certificate of completion to document your 30 hours of
professional development. You should
receive the certificate within 30 days from the day your portfolio
is submitted for review. If the portfolio is incomplete, you will
be notified as soon as possible and asked to resubmit with revisions
and/or additions.
Technology Requirements
This course has been designed for distribution over the internet
to users with high speed access. A modem connection will not accommodate
the media rich lessons. Also required are the latest versions of
Flash Player and Adobe Acrobat Reader. Links are provided on the
course site to download the most up-to-date versions of these free
plug ins.
The Research
Hundreds of research studies in education have
concluded that the only way to improve student achievement is with
a knowledgeable and skillful teacher (What Matters Most, 1996). In
other words, the difference in teacher effectiveness is the single
largest factor affecting academic growth of populations of students
(Sanders, 2000). And the #1 teacher-controlled area influencing student
achievement is classroom management (Wang, Haertl, & Walberg, 1994).
